Dear CMC Family,

From April 21–27, 2024, we celebrated National Environmental Education Week. During this time, it is essential to recognize the significance of environmental literacy in our educational landscape. This week presents us with a prime opportunity to reflect on the intersection of mathematics education and ecological sustainability, both of which are crucial for preparing our students to thrive in the 21st century.

National Environmental Education Week is the nation’s largest celebration of environmental education. It reminds us of the importance of equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and address environmental challenges, including climate change. As educators, we have a responsibility to provide resources and support for our communities to engage with issues of sustainability and environmental stewardship.

At the California Mathematics Council (CMC), we firmly believe that all students have the capacity to become mathematically competent and confident. Our vision is aligned with fostering a comprehensive educational experience that not only emphasizes rigorous and challenging mathematics but also integrates critical themes such as environmental literacy.

Our commitment to promoting professional activities that ensure continual improvement towards excellence in the teaching of mathematics extends to embracing interdisciplinary approaches that connect mathematics with real-world issues like climate action. By incorporating environmental education into our curriculum and professional development programs, we empower educators to inspire students to think critically about the mathematical dimensions of environmental challenges and solutions.

Furthermore, our dedication to communicating with educators, parents, the public, and legislative bodies regarding issues related to teaching rigorous, challenging mathematics includes advocating for incorporating environmental literacy into school curricula. As stewards of mathematical education, we recognize the importance of fostering a generation of problem solvers who can apply mathematical reasoning to address complex environmental issues.

Increasing the diversity of membership and leadership within the California Mathematics Council is also central to our mission. Environmental literacy is a critical component of a well-rounded education because it provides students opportunities for equitable access to real problems that effect their lives. By championing diversity and inclusion in mathematics education, we strive to create learning environments where all students feel empowered to engage with environmental issues and contribute to solutions.

This year's National Environmental Education Week reminds us of the interconnectedness of mathematics education and environmental sustainability. By embracing this theme, we not only advance our mission of promoting excellence in mathematics teaching but also contribute to the development of environmentally conscious and mathematically competent citizens.

As members of the California Mathematics Council, let us continue to collaborate, innovate, and advocate for educational practices that prepare our students to tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow, including those related to the environment.

Thank you for your dedication to mathematics education and commitment to fostering environmental literacy in our schools and communities.

With much respect,

Dr. Ma Bernadette Andres-Salgarino, NBCT

President, California Mathematics Council
