Algebra 1 Test For All 8th Graders

You input and advice are urgently requested.

At its July 2008 meeting, the State Board of Education (SBE) voted to have ALL
8th graders take the Algebra 1 California Standards Test (CST) by the year 2011.
(Click here for the full text of the motion.)

Those in favor of this motion say it is necessary for California to have high standards in mathematics and that Algebra at 8th grade will allow us to “maintain our leadership in a global economy.” Those opposed cite the number of students who are currently taking 8th grade Algebra and are not proficient on the end-of-course CST; those who take Algebra again at 9th grade and still do poorly; and those who are not yet in Algebra at 8th grade and do poorly on the General Math CST they take.

The Governor stated that he would provide the funds needed to accomplish this goal. And this is where we need your input. If we assume that all 8th grade students will be required to take Algebra 1 in 2011:
  1. What must change in the next three years for this to happen?
  2. What are the resources (and funding) that students, teachers, schools, and districts MUST have in order to accomplish this lofty goal?
  3. What are your opinions, concerns, ideas, and possible solutions?

Please take a few moments to complete the short survey designed by CMC to determine what our members (and others) are thinking about this mandate. Don’t put this off—the decisions that will be made are going to affect all future students in our state as well as the work we do with our students. We will share the results with the SBE, the state Department of Education, and Jack O’Connell, the CA Superintendent of Public Instruction.

If the link does not work, please contact the CMC Executive Secretary.

Also shortly after the July vote we were sent copies of letters that people sent to the SBE, expressing varying opinions of the vote.

Those letters … (UNDER CONSTRUCTION; PLEASE BEAR WITH US.)
